I work from home as a writer and homemaker. I’ve worked at various agencies throughout the past 30 years in the mental health field as an advocate and peer specialist. My daughter who is going on 11 years old now has cystic fibrosis and attention deficit disorder. She and I have grown very close, especially through the process of having her at home because of the pandemic for two years for virtual learning. Her Dad works as a musician and an advocate in Watertown. Her Dad and I also have our own disabilities and chronic conditions to manage. Our family has been through a lot but as long as we are together we persevere.
Throughout my work I have really noticed that we live in a community that cares. I have helped so many people along the way and have had that come back to me but as a family we have recently run into some particularly hard times financially and I have had to swallow my pride to ask for financial help. The pandemic has made it even more of a challenge, but I have experienced the power of the Holy Spirit come alive as neighbor helps neighbor where I live and community looks out for its own. I have reached out to the church for help and received it however this particular time there was a glitch in the process. We received a $100 gift card for Walmart, but when my “husband” turned it in at the counter it read $0.00. He left the store and said that he would come home and figure it out. When he got home the phone rang and it was a Walmart Associate saying that they wanted to pay for our groceries! All I could hear, was “Are you sure, that is very nice” and when he got off the phone he told me what was said, “God bless you”. My message to you who may be going through similar circumstances is never lose hope. Never give up because people do care. It may not make the headlines because it is positive news but good people are still out there. Thank you whoever you are, because you have reaffirmed my faith in God and humanity.
